#skincancer - sunscreens don't offer complete protection against skin cancer, according to a new study

A British study at the University of Manchester warns: do not rely on the isolate use of sunscreen for prevention of melanoma, the most aggressive type of skin cancer. The results underscore the importance of combining the use of sunscreen with other protective measures such as hats and baggy clothes, besides looking for shades during the hours of heavy sunlight. Published in the scientific journal Nature, the research done in mice revealed details about how ultraviolet rays damage cells leaving them more susceptible to cancer. The study shows that the sunscreen can reduce cellular DNA damage caused by UV rays, delaying the development of melanoma, but also brings evidence that the isolated use of these filters does not offer complete protection from the harmful effects of sunrays . According to the researchers, it is essential to acquire safe habits to protect yourself from the sun and not get burned - sunburns are, moreover, a clear sign that the cellular DNA was damaged and in the long term, this can lead to skin cancer .

Melanoma is the fifth most common cancer in the UK, with more than 13,000 people diagnosed with the disease each year. In Brazil, the Inca (National Cancer Institute) estimated 6,230 new melanoma cases in 2012.
