Botulinum toxin, commonly known as Botox (pioneer trade name by Allergan) has been used for several years for aesthetic purposes to combat wrinkles and expression lines. When properly injected on certain facial muscles that form expression lines when contracted, the toxin causes temporary muscular relaxation that lasts on average 4-6 months. After this period, the muscles return to their normal activity and a new application is needed.
